Year in Review – 2017

2017:  The short version

There’s this quote from the show “House of Cards” that always resonated with me for some reason.  The quote is from Frank Underwood’s character, as he’s back at his alma mater attending a building dedication in his honor and reminiscing about his wilder and simpler days as a young adult.  He says:

“Harmony.  That’s the word that’s stuck in my mind.  Harmony. It’s not about what’s lasting or permanent.  It’s about individual voices coming together for a moment, and that moment lasts the length of a breath.”

I suppose that Frank Underwood isn’t the ideal character to quote for inspiration, and this thought is complicated further by the serious real-life allegations against the actor playing him in the show.

But there’s something to that quote.  To me, it perfectly captures the idea of transition.  That, when change occurs, we are dually influenced.  One, to unsuccessfully hold on to a past, now irretrievable, and to remember it in glossy ways and forget the imperfections.  And two, to be so focused on looking forward to life after a change event, that you forget to live in the present.  You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

The harmony, though, it’s about living in that transition moment, pausing the note and stretching it for as long as you can without making the music sound terrible.  And when that moment is over, set your eyes set on the horizon, not in the rear view mirror.

You can see this in application by a real US President. Taking in the crowd for that one moment, after finishing his second inaugural address and before tending to the work to be done in a second term.

Last year I wrote about how 2016 was all about perspective and about cognitive dissonance.  2017 was undoubtedly about transition.  Personally, this was the best year of my life.  I experienced the biggest transition that I think I ever will, on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, when Mini was born.  Taking that harmony quote above, the moment at 6:43am on that day stretched for an eternity in my world.  In some ways, I feel like I’m still living my life within that moment, that every second after she was born is a subset of the second when she was born.

I experienced other transitions too.  My family, social, and career life all saw big changes this year.  And it felt that this year of change extended to those close and familiar to me in their own lives.  And even on the national and global stage, the world has seen transition too.  For any doubt, just remember that Donald Trump is now President of the United States.

In the midst of all this change, for me, 2017 was a year where I took the perspective I learned in 2016, and realized that I have so much to be thankful for.  Every day, I can’t help but see the beauty in the world.  I have a wonderful family.  I am healthy.  I am alive.

I ran more this year than I did last year, and I processed a lot of these thoughts on my long runs.  When Mini was born, several people told me to “get used to not running anymore.”  I saw that as a challenge.  I increased my total mileage from 590 to exactly 700 miles this year, which is the equivalent of running from DC to St. Louis.  Adding up all the minutes of every run, I spent four and half days in actual running time.  I ran 114 times in ten different cities, at an average distance of 6.14 miles, with an average pace of 9 minutes and 41 second.  But my most proud accomplishment this year was to run a race at every standard distance–5K, 10K, 10 mile, Half Marathon, Full Marathon–and I PRed three times.  As far as elevation climb, I climbed 21,512 feet, which is higher than the tallest mountain in the Bolivia.  And there you have it, your first random fact of 2018!

So, overall it was just such a great year.  I’m thinking about my goals for 2018, for running and life in general.  Happy 2018 to all, and let’s hope 2019 is a fantastic year!

Two short bouts of being sick + Thanksgiving + general life = lowest running month of the year.  But not by much, 0.19 miles short of September, where I also had a lot going on.

 

It’s clear that my 1000 mile goal for the year will have to wait for 2018.  800 miles is also probably out of reach, but maybe not 750 or 775?  Let’s see.
